If all your drains are flooding or backing up it indicates that the main sewer pipe running from your home is blocked. Call a plumber immediately as these blocks can be difficult to remove. Blockages like this need tackled with sewer rods or a high-pressure water line to break up the blockage and flush the drains.
Frozen pipes generally occur outside the home or in loft spaces where there is no heating. Ensure all water and heating pipes in these areas are lagged with a high-quality lagging material. The main cause of high water bills are running toilets where the toilet reservoir fails to shut off the incoming water once full. They can be hard to spot as the leak is generally silent. Look out for discoloration in the toilet bowl as continuous running water will generally discolour the bowl. Look out for small ripples or shimmering water on the surface of the toilet water. As leaks can remain silent, hidden or difficult to spot it is best to call a plumber.
A running toilet is usually caused by rubber seals failing over time. When new, the rubber seals stop the flow of water to the reservoir once filled. Over time the rubber seals perish and need to be replaced. There is no need for a new toilet as 99% of the time the seals can be replaced. This can be difficult to do so it might be best to leave this one up to a plumber.
The easiest way to unclog a toilet is with a plunger. If you don’t have a plunger to hand, try filling the toilet with a kettle of boiling water. Leave it for 5 minutes to allow the hot water to soften the blockage before attempting to flush.
If a water pipe burst or you discover a fast-leaking pipe, you should immediately turn off your water supply. If you cannot turn off your supply, try wrapping tape or a plastic bag tightly around the pipe. You should then contact an emergency plumber immediately.
